Braxton & Abbey were married on Labor Day weekend this past fall and I cannot say enough about how great the day went. I don’t know where to begin when chatting about this amazing venue. I call it the wedding dream village. Its a huge property dedicated to weddings located in New Windsor, IL. There is  small lake, a location called the Brooder House which houses the bridal party, The Big Red Barn which houses the reception, a ceremony site with a gazebo surrounded by willow trees and its also a vineyard, you heard me right ! My mind was on creative opportunity overload. Thank goodness Braxton & Abbey agreed to let me hit all the opportunities the land offered. We got a little bit of everything. Photos on the dirt road at sunset, under the willow trees, a first look in the grape vines we got it all. Which is why it was so extremely hard to narrow these down for this blog. Abbey & Braxton live in rural Illinois both working in farm and agricultural related field where they first  met so it was only fitting they had a barn inspired wedding. Abbey and I went to the same high school and I had the pleasure of spending the day with old friends and their families so it was even more meaningful to be a part of their day. Feast your eyes on the story of their breath taking day.

Bridgeport Art Center Skyline Loft Wedding of Graig & Mary Kathleen | June 2017 | Chicago Wedding Photographer

Bridgeport Art Center Skyline Loft Chicago Wedding of Graig & Mary Kathleen

Vendors : Venue : Bridgeport Art Center Skyline Loft | Church: St. Joseph Chicago Parish | Flowers : Flowers By Stem | Wedding Planner : Naturally Yours Events | DJ : All Ears DJ | Transportation: Aries Charter |  Catering : Cater By Design | Cake : Oak Mill Bakery | Design & Decor : Atmosphere Events Group | Bridal Dress : Eva’s Bridal Oak Lawn

Mary Kathleen & Graig were married at St. Joseph’s Catholic Parish in Chicago on June 16, 2017. The weather was perfect and so was the day. The day began with Mary Kathleen getting ready with her family where she had a last minute practice of her father daughter dance with her Dad and her Mother and Grandmother helped Mary Kathleen put on her dress. They wrapped up with a champagne toast on Michigan Avenue before starting Family Formal photos. Meanwhile Graig was also getting ready with his family in Old Town. Mary Kathleen and Graig met while participating in a social sports league in Chicago and the rest is history. Teh couple resides in Old Town and have made memories together there as a couple so it was a place we wanted to get some photos for sure and why not encorporate Mary Kathleen’s fun red scooter! We also made a stop at the Kinzie Street Bridge and at the shouth shore of Lake Michigan where you can still see a sliver of skyline. St Joe’s church on Orleans St in River North is stunning and provided several gorgeous photos of the newly weds. The Reception followed at The Bridgeport Art Center where cocktails began in the freight elevator ( as show below, and also one of my favorite details of the venue ) on the way up to the Skyline Loft. The dinner room was covered in gold and orange flowers and accents. Check out those excort cards designed by the Bride herself. The very traditional service was followed by a modern loft reception and every detail was beautiful. Congrats to the couple as I would do it all over with them again in a instant!

Thompson Chicago Hotel Wedding of John & Brittany | City Savvy Imaging | October 2017

Thompson Chicago Hotel Wedding of John & Brittany

Vendors : Venue : Thomspon Chicago Hotel & Nico Osteria| Bridal Dress: Alyssa Kristin Bridal | Cake : Sweet Mandy B’s | Flowers : Stems Chicago |Wedding Bands : Brilliant Earth | Limo : M & M Limo | Groom Suit : Ted Baker | Hair & Makeup : Sola Salon Chicago

John & Brittany were married on October 7th, 2017 at an intimate ceremony at The Thompson Chicago which is a modern and trendy Hotel downtown which also occupies the popular Italian restaurant Nico Osteria which catered their delicious dinner. They kept their wedding party intimate  with just a best man and maid of honor which left us time to get many fantastic photos at Lincoln Park Zoo where they started with their first look. John proposed to Brittany on the skyline view bridge of the Park so it was a sentimental location to share some sweet moments. The vows took place in front of The Thomspon’s signature crescent window that overlooks the building tops downtown. The ceremony was breif and nicely performed  by John’s sister to add more sentiment. One of my many favorite elements of the wedding was the ambiance that was set by the candlelight and florals by Stems Chicago. It was very romantic and the warm palette of the flowers enhanced every single photo with pops of color. Brittany and John have fantastic taste and did a wonderful job planning their day. They were the sweetest couple. Congrats guys! Cheers to many years of happiness.

Omar & Lauren’s Rooftop Cupola LondonHouse Surprise Proposal | Chicago Wedding Photographer

Omar & Lauren { LondonHouse Chicago Surprise Proposal }

Venue : LondonHouse Chicago

Omar contacted me and had a very specific vision for how he wanted to ask his girlfriend Lauren to marry him. The pair are actually from Houston and Lauren went to college in Chicago and had many friends she wanted to visit for the weekend. Omar knew she wouldn’t expect it at that time or at that place so he knew it would be perfect. Omar invited Lauren’s parents from Arizona and his own parents from Puerto Rico. Omar asked for Lauren’s friends to play along and pretend they were going to meet them at the London House. Lauren had no idea they weren’t coming nor did she know both of their parents had made the trip into town to see the whole thing happen. Lauren got one surprise after the other , as Omar had planned to celebrate with her friends afterwords as well. I think you know the rest of the story!!!! She said yes of course. Lauren was beside herself with joy as you can see in the photos her smile couldn’t have gotten any bigger. Thanks to Omar for choosing me to capture the entire engagement surprise!

What a day Margaret & Matt planned for their friends and family. It was full of great taste from the blues band lead by her Dad all the way to the fantastic cannoli wedding cake made by Tesori Italian Trattoria. The ceremony took place at the stunning Chicago Symphony Orchestra Room of The Richard and Helen Thomas Club. We strolled around Millennium Park and The South Garden of The Art Institute of Chicago for photos. The cocktail hour and reception took place at Tesori Chicago Tratorria and Bar.  Margaret and Matt have such a classic and modern taste and it complimented every part of the day beautifully. Margaret’s father Billy Flynn played a couple sets with his Blues Band and what a treat it was! Not one guest was left sitting in their seats, as everyone danced the night away. The Perley Wedding provided so many priceless moments that made it so easy for me to capture. Thank you Matt & Margaret for sharing your day with me and trusting me with your story.

City United Methodist Church of Gary, Indiana | Documentary Photographer | City Savvy Imaging

City United Methodist Church of Gary, Indiana

{ April 2017 }

Article #1 on the history of City United Methodist Church ( Click Here )

Article #2 (2014) , Building Status and Decisions on Demolition

Article #3 Archive of original 1926 photos B&W

This abandon church was an experience I wasn’t expecting.  The city clearly is ok with tourists and photographers entering the building as The gates are open to enter. The interior is littered with garbage and graffiti tagged walls as squatters have taken over and use the space as a hangout and maybe even a temp place to sleep or hide. Tarps hang from the ceilings to catch the portions  of ceiling beams that are literally dangling from the holes in the once stable roof. Talk about waiting for a pin to drop. It was a strategy or move fast or risk the potential of the slightest breeze to trigger an avalanche of crumbling wall to rain down. The first trip in was to check it out and make I wanted to drag my thousands of dollars in equipment into the space. Spending a little bit of time exploring gave me the courage to eventually bring in my gear. Before shooting I spent a minute kind of imagining what those walls had seen over the course of the past 91 years ( built in 1926, and after initial abandonment suffered a fire in 1997). On a perfect spring day of 80 degree weather with blue skies. There were overgrown plants that were growing up the side of this not forgotten but abandon church. I can’t quite put into words all the feelings I had while standing in the middle of it. Single beams of light came through the giant busted out holes in the very elaborate stained glass windows. Pigeons scattered through the absent rooftop and I could hear kids playing at the school just feet away. The life of plants growing through the cracks of a place that has lost all of its own life is an interesting contrast. When you are on the outside of the church it is literally a church in ruins fenced off  with other buildings completely occupied with people, schools and businesses all around it. The city life continues to operate just feet away . Its kind of mind blowing. Its like seeing someone’s yard well maintained and kept up except for a shed that been rusting and falling apart for eternity, such an odd and rare thing to see. You would instantly wonder why anyone would keep up their yard and mow around it for 91 yrs without touching it.

Those walls have seen so much diversity in the guests that have walked through its doors and now broken openings of all kinds.  From citizens worshiping its walls to trespassers destroying the worth of the walls with their graffiti tags. This church has experienced the extreme opposites of what it was built for and what it is now used for. I think one thing that has never left this church is the presence of a higher power. Its intended purpose was to attract society to gather for God and I think that its most likely still witnessing people entering its doors today for the same reason just in a very different landscape. It still provides a very quiet and serene place for one to be alone with their thoughts and connect on a spiritual level. It also has by no means lost its beauty even if it is in a completely different light.

Chicago Women’s March. Trump Protest . January 2017. Documentary Photography . City Savvy Imaging

Chicago Women’s March { January 2017 }

Chicago Tribune Coverage ( Click Here )

I had the pleasure of photographing this  empowering and peaceful march in Chicago on January 20, 2017. It was an extremely rare warm day in the middle of winter ( although you would never be able to tell from these photos ). This march took place to support the rights and views of women in Illinois. People came from many states and people of every gender, race and age group were represented. I would say it was a 50/50 ratio of men to women. Ill be honest knowing that it was a women’s march I wasn’t expecting it to be 50% men. It was and it was amazing. This would have never happened 20 or 30 years ago. What a transformation in time. The protesters were not just marching for women’s rights either, they were marching for immigration rights, black rights, equal pay, you name it, if you were Anti- Trump you were more than welcome. The event started out with a Facebook group that planned just a rally. The rally RSVP ended up being about 20,000 people, that’s when I decided to go. By the time the rally was set to start, 250,000 people showed up and the rally was canceled and the police claimed they canceled the protest as well because they didn’t have enough time to shut down the appropriate streets. It was amazing! Everyone was cheering each other on. Hugs, support, chants, music, tears and home made signs carried everyone through the streets. Grandparents and even babies only weeks old were in attendance. There was no violence, no angry participants and it was like the entire world was on one team. I can’t personally say that I’ve ever experienced or felt anything like it. Chicago was just one of the many large cities across the U.S. that participated and voices were clearly heard.

When I was in high school and realized that I loved photography I always wanted to be a documentary photographer/journalist. Part of the reason I never pursued it was because I was horrible at writing. I’m still not the greatest but I have started to implement a documentary feel into my weddings. I’m also a bit of a news junkie. In Chicago there is never a shortage of big events. This city never seems to slow down, its constantly changing and growing which is one of the reasons I’ve stayed here for almost a decade. As long as I’ve lived here I’ve always had two jobs and at some points three. I never worked less than 50 hrs a week. As a result of being in retail and grad school, I usually worked weekends and holidays, leaving zero energy to hit the streets to shoot a passion project. I am now a full time photographer and I have some time to finally go to pop up events at the drop of a hat if necessary. Last November I decided to participate as a spectator for the Cubs World Series win in the streets and was worried that taking my camera would be a bad idea in case things got out of control. I regretted not taking it. So when the women’s march came up I didn’t want to have any regrets. I love Chicago and I love that I live in a country where I have the freedom of speech and the right to protest. I also love all of the amazingly creative protester’s with their handmade very artsy signs. So many artists! Also a big thank you to all the Chicago Police that helped corral the masses and keep everyone safe.

Paul & Giovanna’s Chicago Surprise Engagement Proposal | Chicago Wedding Photographer | City Savvy Imaging

Paul & Giovanna Are Engaged!

{ November 2016 }

Paul & Giovanna are from Toronto, Canada and Paul contacted me to photograph his proposal in November. Paul had it all sketched out for me and I was to be the “tour guide” who by chance had a camera on me. I always get nervous in general for Surprise Proposals, Im not sure who has more nerves me or the groom to be. So when Paul asked me to play the part of a tour guide I was terrified that I wouldn’t be very convincing. Thank goodness we arranged for Paul to pop the question just minutes into the “tour” of Millennium Park. Once she said yes, we did actually take a little tour of Millennium Park and got some iconic photos. I loved working with this stylish couple, they fit right into the big city scene. Congrats to the soon to be Mr & Mrs.
