City United Methodist Church of Gary, Indiana | Documentary Photographer | City Savvy Imaging

City United Methodist Church of Gary, Indiana

{ April 2017 }

Article #1 on the history of City United Methodist Church ( Click Here )

Article #2 (2014) , Building Status and Decisions on Demolition

Article #3 Archive of original 1926 photos B&W

This abandon church was an experience I wasn’t expecting.  The city clearly is ok with tourists and photographers entering the building as The gates are open to enter. The interior is littered with garbage and graffiti tagged walls as squatters have taken over and use the space as a hangout and maybe even a temp place to sleep or hide. Tarps hang from the ceilings to catch the portions  of ceiling beams that are literally dangling from the holes in the once stable roof. Talk about waiting for a pin to drop. It was a strategy or move fast or risk the potential of the slightest breeze to trigger an avalanche of crumbling wall to rain down. The first trip in was to check it out and make I wanted to drag my thousands of dollars in equipment into the space. Spending a little bit of time exploring gave me the courage to eventually bring in my gear. Before shooting I spent a minute kind of imagining what those walls had seen over the course of the past 91 years ( built in 1926, and after initial abandonment suffered a fire in 1997). On a perfect spring day of 80 degree weather with blue skies. There were overgrown plants that were growing up the side of this not forgotten but abandon church. I can’t quite put into words all the feelings I had while standing in the middle of it. Single beams of light came through the giant busted out holes in the very elaborate stained glass windows. Pigeons scattered through the absent rooftop and I could hear kids playing at the school just feet away. The life of plants growing through the cracks of a place that has lost all of its own life is an interesting contrast. When you are on the outside of the church it is literally a church in ruins fenced off  with other buildings completely occupied with people, schools and businesses all around it. The city life continues to operate just feet away . Its kind of mind blowing. Its like seeing someone’s yard well maintained and kept up except for a shed that been rusting and falling apart for eternity, such an odd and rare thing to see. You would instantly wonder why anyone would keep up their yard and mow around it for 91 yrs without touching it.

Those walls have seen so much diversity in the guests that have walked through its doors and now broken openings of all kinds.  From citizens worshiping its walls to trespassers destroying the worth of the walls with their graffiti tags. This church has experienced the extreme opposites of what it was built for and what it is now used for. I think one thing that has never left this church is the presence of a higher power. Its intended purpose was to attract society to gather for God and I think that its most likely still witnessing people entering its doors today for the same reason just in a very different landscape. It still provides a very quiet and serene place for one to be alone with their thoughts and connect on a spiritual level. It also has by no means lost its beauty even if it is in a completely different light.

Chicago Women’s March. Trump Protest . January 2017. Documentary Photography . City Savvy Imaging

Chicago Women’s March { January 2017 }

Chicago Tribune Coverage ( Click Here )

I had the pleasure of photographing this  empowering and peaceful march in Chicago on January 20, 2017. It was an extremely rare warm day in the middle of winter ( although you would never be able to tell from these photos ). This march took place to support the rights and views of women in Illinois. People came from many states and people of every gender, race and age group were represented. I would say it was a 50/50 ratio of men to women. Ill be honest knowing that it was a women’s march I wasn’t expecting it to be 50% men. It was and it was amazing. This would have never happened 20 or 30 years ago. What a transformation in time. The protesters were not just marching for women’s rights either, they were marching for immigration rights, black rights, equal pay, you name it, if you were Anti- Trump you were more than welcome. The event started out with a Facebook group that planned just a rally. The rally RSVP ended up being about 20,000 people, that’s when I decided to go. By the time the rally was set to start, 250,000 people showed up and the rally was canceled and the police claimed they canceled the protest as well because they didn’t have enough time to shut down the appropriate streets. It was amazing! Everyone was cheering each other on. Hugs, support, chants, music, tears and home made signs carried everyone through the streets. Grandparents and even babies only weeks old were in attendance. There was no violence, no angry participants and it was like the entire world was on one team. I can’t personally say that I’ve ever experienced or felt anything like it. Chicago was just one of the many large cities across the U.S. that participated and voices were clearly heard.

When I was in high school and realized that I loved photography I always wanted to be a documentary photographer/journalist. Part of the reason I never pursued it was because I was horrible at writing. I’m still not the greatest but I have started to implement a documentary feel into my weddings. I’m also a bit of a news junkie. In Chicago there is never a shortage of big events. This city never seems to slow down, its constantly changing and growing which is one of the reasons I’ve stayed here for almost a decade. As long as I’ve lived here I’ve always had two jobs and at some points three. I never worked less than 50 hrs a week. As a result of being in retail and grad school, I usually worked weekends and holidays, leaving zero energy to hit the streets to shoot a passion project. I am now a full time photographer and I have some time to finally go to pop up events at the drop of a hat if necessary. Last November I decided to participate as a spectator for the Cubs World Series win in the streets and was worried that taking my camera would be a bad idea in case things got out of control. I regretted not taking it. So when the women’s march came up I didn’t want to have any regrets. I love Chicago and I love that I live in a country where I have the freedom of speech and the right to protest. I also love all of the amazingly creative protester’s with their handmade very artsy signs. So many artists! Also a big thank you to all the Chicago Police that helped corral the masses and keep everyone safe.

Paul & Giovanna’s Chicago Surprise Engagement Proposal | Chicago Wedding Photographer | City Savvy Imaging

Paul & Giovanna Are Engaged!

{ November 2016 }

Paul & Giovanna are from Toronto, Canada and Paul contacted me to photograph his proposal in November. Paul had it all sketched out for me and I was to be the “tour guide” who by chance had a camera on me. I always get nervous in general for Surprise Proposals, Im not sure who has more nerves me or the groom to be. So when Paul asked me to play the part of a tour guide I was terrified that I wouldn’t be very convincing. Thank goodness we arranged for Paul to pop the question just minutes into the “tour” of Millennium Park. Once she said yes, we did actually take a little tour of Millennium Park and got some iconic photos. I loved working with this stylish couple, they fit right into the big city scene. Congrats to the soon to be Mr & Mrs.

I met Paul when he contacted me in March 2016 ( Click here to see the surprise proposal photos ) to photograph his surprise proposal to Katherine on the Kinzie Street bridge in Chicago surrounded by out of town family. We all hit it off and soon I was photographing their formal engagement session and wedding ( Click here to see the engagement photos ). These two are the most photogenic couple ever and they ooze love and excitement. I don’t think I could give them a million dollars to dim their beaming smiles. They were married in Manistee, Michigan which is a charming very small beachtown on Lake Michigan. Katherine has extended family in Manistee and she spent much of her summers there as a child. The bridal party got ready in the family occupied historic mansion located in Manistee, the mansion belongs to her Katherine’s uncle and is historic landmark built in 1885. The groom and groomsmen plus best lady took a stroll around downtown for photos and also spent time at The Ramsdell which is a beautiful historic hotel downtown. The white tented reception took place at The Manistee Golf and Country Club, where The Bluewater Kings Band kept everyone on their feet. Katherine styled their beautiful wedding with a chic beach style. The wedding party and close family celebrated privately between the ceremony and reception on a lighthouse pier on 1st street beach with champagne, speeches and hugs. Guests danced the night away to a full 9+ piece band under the swaying string lights. This wedding was a dream to photograph, the weather was perfect, the day had no flaws and the backdrops were all amazing. I was lucky to find these two. Ill take a million more weddings like this!

Peter & Kalli (Engaged) Lasalle Street Bridge Engagement | Chicago Wedding Photographer | City Savvy Imaging

Peter & Kalli

Peter & Kalli were referred to me by a friend and are actually getting married next month!  I love when I’m given creative freedom, and that’s exactly what these two gave me. I had my eye on this coffee shop downtown Chicago on Jackson Blvd for at least a year and they had never seen it before and were excited when I took them, as they said it reminded them of some spots they traveled to recently. The string lights and atmosphere of that small space makes it feel like you are not at all in Chicago but at a bistro in France. We also took some of the popular shots on Lasalle Street Bridge to highlight their request for the architecture to be featured in the background. This session just proves that if you are willing to brave the low 40 degree temps in the middle of January and give your photographer some freedom, your session can be just as beautiful as a summer session. My favorite type of sessions are engagement sessions. They are not rushed and there is plenty of time for the couple to get relaxed and get to know me and how I photograph. They are unlike a normal wedding day which most of the time only allows for a small period of time to shoot photos of just the bride and groom. Wedding days can be very stressful and chaotic and many of my ideas go without execution because of the  many fluid changes that get made last minute with time constraints. I always have high hopes for all the beautiful shots Ive created in my mind but with a structured day like a wedding day I can only create so much especially when a couple might already have photo requests. I always do my best to create at least some photo requests but as an artist I work best when given the freedom to create.

Thank you Peter & Kalli for giving me the freedom to create the photos in my mind. I love how they turned out!
