As a Chicago engagement photographer, I’m always helping couples find locations that feel peaceful, meaningful, and visually unique—and Daniel & Ruth’s summer session at the Garden of the Phoenix (also known as Osaka Garden) is one of my favorite examples of that. Located in The Jackson Park Neighborhood you can only get to this park on foot. There is no close parking lot and this oasis is located inside a wooded area near the Science and Industry Museum. Its a small park with immaculate gardens that feature rare wildlife. If you place yourself in just the right place you can get a view of the museum across the water. On a warm summer day, the garden was lush and vibrant. The greenery was at its peak, and the calm water features reflected soft light throughout the space. When I photograph sessions here, I focus on movement—walking along the curved paths, pausing on bridges, and letting couples interact naturally with their surroundings. Daniel & Ruth’s session is a perfect reminder that Chicago isn’t just about skyscrapers and city streets. It’s also home to quiet, meaningful places that tell a different kind of story.

My favorite aspects of this session was how dramatic their presence was, they also dressed all the way up and it really elevated the session. The final piece of the puzzle of perfection was the light. Golden hour light peaking through this perfectly green trees created a glow that I don’t think I can ever re-create.
