How to Keep a Chicago Proposal an Actual Surprise
Pictured here is Freddy & Shauna’s surprise proposal on a rainy day at Olive Park in Chicago. Freddy came to Chicago to accompany Shauna on a work trip. Freddy planned a walk to Olive Park to take some classic tourist photos of one of the more popular scenic spots that is considered instagrammable. The trip to the park to take photos made sense and to Freddy & Shauna because they were tourists. This plan made the proposal easy to keep a surprise because it’s a believable scenario.
One reason why planning a proposal can be tricky is the fact that there needs to be a convincing storyline curated and executed in order to get your partner to the location in which you want to propose. Here are some ways to make sure the secret is kept when planning the proposal.
- Find a reason to get your partner to the proposal location. I would say the most sensible plan is to tell your partner you are going to a nice dinner or a party for someone else. This way they won’t ask too many questions and the bonus is that they will look their best. You can also plan a date in which the location is your preferred scenic spot. For example: Picnic on the lake, then you can have the skyline behind you. Whatever plans you make, the key is to make it believable or an activity that you would actually do as a couple.
- Be selective when deciding who to let in on the plan. Don’t tell too many people your plan. You can risk exposing the surprise if someone accidentally reveals the surprise before it happens.
- Include at least one surprise. Sometimes couples prefer to discuss an engagement before the actual proposal and in that case they may have an idea that its going to happen. Everyone’s preferences are different and that’s ok too. Its possible your partner already knows it’s coming, maybe they already know what the ring looks like or that its going to happen at a certain time of year. Plan something that has at least one element of surprise since the rest is already planned. Let’s say you already picked out the ring together and decided to be engaged by the fall. Then try including a family celebration after the proposal and let that be the surprise element. The entire event doesn’t have to be a surprise but some spontaneity is always fun.
Whatever you decide to do, surprise or no surprise, always make sure you keep your partners wants in mind.
